The big winter holidays are behind us and the weather is crazy cold. There is something to look forward to though, Valentine’s Day! You might want to spend the evening in one of your favorite restaurants – if so, you might want to make the reservations now since it’s often one of the industry’s busiest nights.

I love to cook and I really enjoy it when I have the right tools. I can’t stand it when I’m ready to make a batch of desserts or cook a big meal and then I find I don’t have the right pot or pan that I need to get the job done right. Then I have to sort through my supplies to find something that will do. Very frustrating. That’s why I love this beautiful Paula Deen 12 Piece Porcelain Nonstick Cookware Set.

This is a not just a great-looking set of cookware, but it’s well-made and practical too. It has all of the most essential pots I could use all of the time including two covered saucepans, a covered saute pan, a sturdy Dutch Oven, 2 big skillets and a couple of nylon cooking tools too. The cookware is constructed of aluminum so it heats evenly and the porcelain exterior and nonstick interior makes for easy clean-up. The cookware comes in a variety of colors and features tempered glass lids so you watch your food while it’s cooking. I chose the red nonstick cookware set for my kitchen and it looks fantastic on the stove.

There are always a few favorites that appear time after time, from potluck to potluck. I’d say of all the traditional dishes, the crockpot calico beans are one of our favorites. We’ve had many varieties, some without meat, some a little sweeter than others, but they’re all good. I happen to like a good mix of beans, a lot of onion, and a slightly tangy flavor. The kids could skip the onion and go right for the brown sugar. My husband prefers the calico beans with meat, of course! Anyway you prefer, this dish is always satisfying.

As with all the crockpot recipes I have, there’s always a little bit of personal taste involved. I might put in just a dash more vinegar, whereas someone else may like just a touch more brown sugar. One of my friend’s calico beans are always full of lots of beans, while another friend prefers kidney beans, so her dish is heavy on the kidney beans. Any way you make it, using the crock pot for your calico beans really works well. This is a recipe that begs to be cooked long and slow; perfect for your crock pot.
